Welcome to our new format. We hope you find it easier to keep up on various topics.

We hope you have been enjoying the summer and some downtime for vacations and family.  Our second in-person luncheon was held on August 12, at Westwood with a great presentation on Medicare and a panel discussion on the difference between Maryland and Virginia probate laws.  We were happy to see so many faces in attendance in a typical off month for meetings with 40 in attendance.

We are preparing for the upcoming months mindful of the Delta variant with our member and sponsor’s safety, balanced with getting back to some normal events.  September and October events will be in person and necessary precautions and facility guidelines will be followed.  Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we navigate the changing landscape.

 Upcoming Events

We will be hosting an in-person luncheon on September 24 at Kenwood Country Club in Maryland.  We have two great speakers lined up with 2 CFP, 2 CIMA CE credits and CPA CPE offered.   Dave Thomas will start the program discussing energy management for High Performance and the keys to building health habits.  Jason Howell, CFP will discuss Impact Investments and sustainable investing and Philanthropic Giving.

 Volunteer Opportunities

The FPA NCA chapter in collaboration with the University of Maryland Global Campus hosted a one-day virtual Financial Wellness Day on August 11, 2021.  This program, a first of its kind, provided a virtual, free, no-strings-attached financial planning information to UMGC students, their families and consumers across the country.

The inaugural event had 13 FPA members volunteer and 80 attendees of which 30% were the general public, 40% UMGC students and 30% UMGC faculty and staff.  The day included booth visits and chats with the volunteers on varying financial topics. Participants also had the opportunity to attend 3 webinars.  Thanks for those who participated. We look forward to building this program in the years ahead.

Stay tuned for future opportunities.

 Next Generation

In the beginning of August, our chapter hosted one of our first in-person events of 2021, the NexGen Retreat held in Washington, DC. This event had a high attendance rate, with over 30 people from all over the DMV area meeting in DC for the event. Attendees of the retreat heard from speakers discussing topics ranging from Medicare to running and maintaining a successful financial planning practice. To cap off the event, we held a panel discussion with local leaders in our industry to discuss how to carve out your career path, trends in the financial planning industry, and finding your niche. Afterwards, attendees were asked to stick around for a happy hour and take the opportunity to network (in person!) with other financial planners in the DMV area.

We will host the next NexGen Open forum virtually on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at 5:30.  We hope to see you there.

President’s Message

Rose Price, CFP®

A big thank you for the support and attendance at our first in person luncheon in 15 months.  The resilience and support of this community continues to amaze me.  It was so nice to see so many of you attend the July 15th program at Westwood Country Club and to network and catchup.  We had over 60 in attendance and the opportunity to hear from our sponsors and reconnect.

We have a lot going on in August and something for everyone.  We will kick off the month with NexGen hosting their annual retreat in person. The event will be August 4 from 1:00-5:00; held in DC with two great speakers, a panel discussion on Career Development, and a networking happy hour to wrap up the day.  If you are a younger member looking to connect with your peers, this a great program to attend.

Next up on the calendar is an opportunity to volunteer and mentor the next generation. The FPA NCA chapter in collaboration with the University of Maryland Global Campus will host a one-day virtual Financial Wellness Day.  The event will be held on August 11, 2021.  This program, a first of its kind, will provide virtual, free, no-strings-attached financial planning information to UMGC students, their families, and consumers across the country.  Volunteers from the FPA will meet with participants for 30 minutes to answer and discuss a planning question with a UMGC student in the CFP Program shadowing.  This gives members an opportunity to mentor the next generation of planners and work with those who may not be able to afford our services.  For more information or to sign up, please reach out to Candace Lee at Board@fpanca.org

We will be hosting an in-person luncheon on August 12 at Westwood Country Club.  We have two great speakers lined up with 2 CFP, 2 CIMA CE credits and CPA CPE offered.   Margo Steinlage will start the program discussing the many changes in the Insurance and Health Care industry and the role health care costs can play in retirement as well as things to consider when selecting Medicare plans.   Coryn Rosenstock and Michael Manning will close out the program with a panel discussion on the Differences between Maryland and Virginia Estate/probate laws.

We will have our September luncheon at Kenwood Country Club on September 24, 2021- please visit the website for program updates.
