Dan Lash, CFP®, AIF® President’s
Message
I hope you had a
wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family.
We’ve had a great year of FPA NCA meetings and events, and of course a
few challenges along the way! While the January
blizzard tried to put a wrench in our Winter Symposium, our Peggy Nelson and
our Board shifted gears quickly. Our
event went on with remote access to our speakers, allowing for full CE credits,
which was quite a feat! In February, our Career Day grew for the third year, providing
significant value to all the employers in attendance, as many full-time and
intern positions were filled. Our monthly
luncheon meetings offered a wide variety of expert speakers and topics, and
were hosted in locations in both MD and VA to help meet the logistical needs of
all of our members.
On December 15, we
will host our Annual Membership Meeting, the chapter’s final meeting of the
year. This meeting will include two great speakers as well as a vote on the
chapter’s 2017 Board of Directors, so please plan to attend to vote. Our first speaker
will be Gary Altman, JD, CFP®, with a discussion of the realities of estate
planning, including how
the new President may impact estate tax, possible newly proposed regulations
and policies, a review of who needs Estate Tax Planning and why, and the risks
involved in neglecting this planning. Gary will also share techniques
and planning tips that can prevent family discord after death, as well as ideas
for protections against elder abuse and other potential pit falls.
Our second speaker
is Pavlina Tcherneva, PhD, Associate Professor and Chair at the Department of
Economics at Bard College. Paulina is
also a Research Associate at the Levy Economics Institute and a Senior Research
Scholar at the Center for Full Employment and Price Stability. She will be discussing post-election thoughts
for the economy and financial markets.
Be sure to register for this event at www.fpanca.org/events
as space is limited
and it always sells out.
Looking forward, don’t
forget to mark your calendars for January 30, 2017, which will be our Annual
Winter Symposium. This is the largest
attended meeting of the year and will offer 7 CE credits for the day, plus
Ethics, all pending approval. There are
too many great speakers to mention here, but one will be Andy Friedman
presenting “The Washington Update – Income Tax and Fiscal Policy.” According to CNBC, Andy Friedman is “one of
the nation’s most sought-after speakers on all things political.” As an expert
on all political affairs, Andy is known for predicting the outcomes of
Washington tax and fiscal deliberations, and for providing financial advisors
and investors with strategies to consider in light of changing political
landscapes. Be sure to view the agenda and register at www.fpanca.org/events.
I would like to
personally thank the 2016 Board of Directors for their exceptional job running
a great chapter, and for helping me make it through the year as chapter
president. A special thank you to Peggy
Nelson, who, as most of you know, is our executive director and the reason our
chapter is able to function at a nationally recognized level. I wish all of our future board members the
best of luck - please know I am always available to help when needed.
Enjoy the holidays and
have a Happy New Year.
Best Regards,
Dan
