President’s Message

Hello friends. As we wrap up May and head into June and the Summer months, I always look forward to things slowing down a bit so I can focus on my practice and all of those “little” things I’ve been putting off until I have the time. How about you?

Our chapter’s big event in May was the annual Charity Golf Tournament. 75 golfers came together to support the event and were treated by Mother Nature to a beautiful day. This year’s tournament raised $8,000 for the Foundation for Financial Planning and another $2,000 for our own scholarship fund. Congratulations to our tournament champions, Wes Kabance, Shawn Walker, Brian Runkles and Chandru Ramachandran!

This month’s installment of insights from our own icons and trailblazers comes from Rita Cheng, CEO of Blue Ocean Global Wealth. Rita has been featured in so many publications it’s impossible to name them all. In addition to her role as past-President of our own chapter and former spokesperson for the AARP, Rita is currently serving as a CFP® Board Ambassador.

My involvement with FPA helps me support our community, develop lifelong friendships and gain valuable insight from the luminaries of our profession. FPA is the community for all who advance and promote the financial planning profession. When I mentor aspiring CFP® professionals, I encourage them to join FPA and become involved. The knowledge and leadership experience have helped me develop personally and professionally.”

If you’ve not done so already, please make sure to sign up for the Spring Symposium on June 8th at the Dulles Hyatt. We have a great line-up of presentations that will give you actionable ideas you can put to work in your practice immediately. Whether it’s a new way to look at investment selection or a better way to communicate with your clients, this year’s event has something to offer everyone. Including lots of CEs!

Also in June we have FPA Advocacy Day on June 6th where you can come together with planners from across the country to educate our legislators on the importance of real financial planning. And on June 19th there will be a NexGen study group at the offices of SBSB in McLean. I hope to see you at one of these events.

I wish you a wonderful summer and as always, I appreciate your passion for our profession and for helping others.

All the best,

Howard

President’s Message

Hi. Now that tax season is behind us, hopefully you have some time to come up for air and focus on other things. You may have even noticed that Spring has finally arrived. As you consider how to invest your time in the coming months, may I suggest our Spring Symposium? We have a fantastic lineup of speakers this year including The Emotional Investor, Jay Mooreland, founder of the Behavioral Finance Network. Jay will help us to better communicate with our clients.

In addition to National Pecan month, April was also Financial Literacy Month. On the 25th, (which was World Penguin Day) the chapter joined forces with A Call For Action and 7 on Your Side to host a call-in event at ABC Channel 7. During this two hour event, we answered 110 calls from consumers seeking our advice. A big thanks to Shellie Peters, Jim Simos, Christopher Mellone and Sarah Graham for volunteering to help at this event. Also in April, we partnered with Goodwill at their annual RISE event which celebrates and educates their employees. A special thanks to Doug Keegan for coordinating and volunteering at this event which provided pro-bono advice to seven people.

Peggy and I went to Phoenix to attend the Alliance Forum, which is a gathering of leaders of the largest FPA chapters. We spent the better part of our day and a half meeting sharing best practices and brainstorming about the challenges each chapter faces.

Upcoming events include our Annual Charity Golf Tournament on May 2nd. In June we’ll have Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill which is a great opportunity to interact with your legislators and inform them of the importance of financial planning. June 8th is our Spring Symposium at the Dulles Hyatt. As I mentioned before, you don’t want to miss this event. And last but not least, on June 19th, NextGen will hold a study group session at the offices of SBSB in McLean.

Just so you know, May is National Salad Month and National Barbecue Month. I know which one I’ll be celebrating. Have a great month and as always, I appreciate everything you do to make your clients’ lives better and to advance our profession. Thanks for your passion!

All the best,
Howard
