President’s Message

Happy Independence Day 2017! The country is officially 241 years Young!

We had a very successful Spring Symposium highlighted by Wade Pfau’s new look at reverse mortgages and topped off by Bob Veres’ look into future revenue models of advisory practices. We had a little social media, banking landscape, made a case for alternative investments and examined senior housing transition planning in the middle of the day for a well-rounded program designed to help advisors prepare for the new fiduciary world.

We also congratulated our Leadership Award winner Kathleen Sindell and our Lifetime Achievement Award winner Ellisa Buie. We had recognized Emily Chiang as the Planner of the Year Award winner in January.

I would like to say goodbye to board member Christine D’Amico as she heads to southwestern Virginia to be closer to family. Christine has helped us have a successful Golf event this year, as well as many amazing and fun social networking events. We will miss Christine and wish her the best of success in her move.

What would summer be without a healthy dose of social activity? So, join us for our next happy hour with one hour of CE scheduled for July 12th at Bazin’s in Vienna, or our membership happy hour on  August 8th at Chima in Tysons. Also, don’t miss the NexGen Retreat on July 26 at a country home in Great Falls for learning and networking sessions in a relaxed and inviting environment!

See our chapter calendar for other upcoming events. We have a fall calendar planned with three wonderful luncheons and a happy hour with CE, including terrific speakers and a September Ethics class. More details will be coming soon on these events.

Remember we are always looking for people to get involved and volunteer even if it is just one thing. We hope to see you at an upcoming event soon.

If you are interested in getting involved on the board in 2018 please contact Howard Pressman, our current President-elect, and discuss opportunities for you for the next year.

Sincerely,
Bryan

Bryan Beatty, CFP®, AIF®                             President’s Message

We are almost half way through the year and we have seen the delay of the Fiduciary Rule twice. Then there was no further delay on the first round of implementation and a promise for revision, followed by a new rule promised from the SEC. So, will enforcement on the DOL rule happen in 2018 or will it change some more? Stay tuned. Regardless of the fact that the rule could change and who will write the final rule might change, one thing is for certain, you should be changing your business model to a fiduciary style model in order to move into the next generation of financial advice and planning.

One way to be ready for such change is to be informed. Please join us for a great event next week. Your last chance to register is TODAY!

This June’s Spring Symposium will address these issues head on.  The June symposium is June 5th at the Dulles Hyatt. “Navigating Change in the Age of Uncertainty”. You can register here to learn how you can compete and prosper in the changing climate of the new “Fiduciary” world. Speakers will be Wade Pfau, Bob Veres, and Victor Gaxiola from Hearsay Social to name just a few.

Our charity golf event was another great success. We are looking for feedback on the location for upcoming golf venues. So, if you have a facility that you would recommend for the event, please email Peggy Nelson with your comments.

NexGen will have its annual gathering in June in Chicago, Illinois, and there is still time to sign up on the ONEFPA website. Meanwhile, you can also sign up for the upcoming NexGen Study Group on June 13 in McLean, VA. See our website for this registration.

Do you have an opinion about how our industry should work? Then join us for Advocacy Day  June 20 -21 (click to learn more about advocacy), where we storm the hill to educate our political leaders about the FPA and the planning profession. See Parker Trasborg, CFP, trasborgp@cjmltd.com, for details on how to help.

Our second happy hour with CE is scheduled for July. See our chapter calendar for other upcoming events. Please join us on June 22 for our Happy Hour without CE, too!

Remember we are always looking for people to get involved and volunteer even if it is just one thing. See you at an upcoming event.

Best Regards,
Bryan
