President’s Message

Hello Friends- I can’t believe it’s August already! The first half of my year as President has passed so quickly, and it’s now time to focus on the second half. What I am most excited about is that we are planning to simulcast a monthly meeting to two locations! Members have told us that they want to attend more meetings, but the required time commitment often holds them back. You have also been clear that connecting with peers is of primary importance. We listened and through this new initiative, hope to continue to foster the networking and friendships that is a hallmark of our chapter while also bringing the meetings closer to you, so they’re easier to attend. Our plan is to hold the meeting live in one location, just like always, but then “beam” the meeting to a second location across the Potomac. You of course can choose which gathering you would like to attend. We are still working out some of the details and plan to test the technology at an upcoming Board meeting before rolling it out live. I know that this is different, and it may take a few tries to gain momentum, but I believe this will make it easier for as many folks as possible to connect with our chapter and benefit from our outstanding programing. Stay tuned for more details on this exciting initiative and please reach out to me with your thoughts, I would love to hear from you.

July’s most exciting event was the NexGen Retreat held in DuPont Circle. I arrived late in the day to spend some time with this energetic and passionate group of planners. Presenters at this year’s event included Wayne Zell, ESQ, of Odin, Feldman and Pittleman, Claudia Salazar, Psy. D. and our own Yusuf Abugideiri, CFP® with Yeskie Buie.

The other event of the month was our Happy Hour with CE held at the University of Virginia’s Falls Church campus. Tom Galgano, CFA, with Vanguard joined us to expand upon the popular white paper Advisor’s Alpha. Afterwards we all headed to Mad Fox brewery for some fun and suds. This was our first member event at this great facility, and we expect to hold more there in the future.

August’s events include another Happy Hour and Reunion at Chima on the 7th Yay! An Allied Professional Cornhole Tournament on the 15th, where we’ll gather at the Tyson’s Biergarten to connect with peers from other related disciplines in the financial services world. And just so the world doesn’t think we drink too much, on the 21st there will be a NexGen study group held at the offices of SBSB. Please visit our website for additional details on these events.

Thank you all for your passion, enthusiasm and professionalism. It’s easy to forget how much of a difference we make in the lives of our clients. So take a few moments and think about how we change and improve lives every day and how lucky we are to be Financial Planners! Have a great month.

All the best,

 Howard

President’s Message

Hello. I hope you’re all having a great start to your summer and are finding some time to recharge your “batteries” and gear up for the second half of the year.

In June, we had another successful Spring Symposium. I came away with some great ideas that I plan to implement into my practice. Brad Rutan with MFS seemed to be the favorite speaker of the day. Brad talked about business disruptors and how changes in technology, consumer preferences and geopolitics are changing business as we know it. Many large, well-known companies may have trouble competing as these disruptors alter the world around us. In Brad’s opinion, many passive investing strategies are built based on the past and are not positioned to take advantage of the exciting advances the future holds. Mike Fox, founder of advertising agency the Mullingar Group was another crowd favorite. Mike talked to us about the importance of building and communicating your brand and gave us concrete steps on doing both. Starting with emotional benefits, then building a differentiated process and finally rounding out with tangible features can help you create outstanding client experiences. Thank you to Dan Reilly and Thornburg Investment Management for bringing Mike. Jay Mooreland, the Emotional Investor provided a fascinating presentation on coaching and communicating with your clients.

Thank you to those who completed the speaker evaluations. Judging from the responses we received, you all felt good about the day too. We also received some great suggestions on how to improve the event. It is always a challenge to create an all-day event that caters to the diverse needs of our members. Whether it’s location or the number of CE credits offered, there are many differing opinions and, of course, financial constraints. Please know that we hear each of you and will make every attempt to factor these into future events.

Two of our members were recently recognized by Investment News as 40 Under 40 for 2018. Congratulations to Tess Downing and Katie Hammer on your well deserved recognition!

This month’s programing includes a fantastic Happy Hour program with CE! Join us at the University of Virginia’s Falls Church campus to hear from Vanguard’s Tom Galgano, CFA. You’ve no doubt seen white papers on Vanguard’s “Advisor Alpha”. Tom will be building upon Advisor’s Alpha by showing us a model based on seven key factors that will help you stay relevant in an ever changing environment. Afterwards we’ll head up the street to Mad Fox Brewery to unwind and enjoy the company of our peers.

Also in July, our NexGen members will gather in DuPont Circle for their annual NexGen Retreat.

That’s it for me this month! I wish you all a very happy Fourth of July and as always, thank you so much for all that you do to change and improve lives.

All the best,
Howard
