2014 Symposium: The Latest and Greatest in
Technology and Speakers Await You!

Dear Colleagues:

It’s a tri-fecta! It’s the Final Countdown to the 2014 Winter Symposium, Super Bowl XLVIII and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. You should not miss any of these exciting events! If you have not registered for the Winter Symposium, time is of the essence to be a part of this wonderful day! The Board of Directors and Winter Symposium planning committee have implemented some very exciting changes. We will be delivering the latest high tech and green experience possible with all of the presentations conveniently accessible via Guidebook with mobile capabilities. We strive to find innovative ways for you to network and share your contact information with fellow attendees and sponsors, and you will not be disappointed with this year’s efforts!

To further improve the member experience, we have coordinated with the event staff at the Dulles Hyatt Conference Center to have wireless internet and power stations available at the Attendee tables. This will make your download of the Attendee handouts an easy and flawless effort.

I am particularly excited about this year’s theme “Beyond the Numbers: Engaging Your Clients’ Hearts and Minds”. You definitely do not want to miss a full day of engaging presentations from nationally recognized Speakers. Here are just a few of the engaging presentations that you will hear at the Symposium:

Carol Craigie, PhD from the College of Financial Planning will present “Making it Easier for Clients to Act:  Applying behavioral economic concepts to financial planning”. This session will introduce the behavioral economic concepts, as well as communication strategies that will make it easier for clients to implement their financial plans. Behavioral Economics studies how people make financial decisions and this has practical applications for financial planners.  From "priming" clients with our scope of engagement, through presenting our plans using present budget reduction in retirement, presents many opportunities for us to make it easier for clients to understand and take action.

Kathleen Burns Kingsbury will present “Advising Women in Couples”. As women’s economic power is on the rise, it is vital for advisors to learn how to be more female-friendly as this will be an important advantage over the competition and allow you to capture and retain more assets. This session will address the following: (1) The common mistakes advisors make advising women and how to avoid them; (2) The importance of exploring your couple’s mindset in effectively advising partners; (3) Strategies for balancing both partner’s advisory needs inside and outside the office; (4) Action steps to take tomorrow at the office.

Carolyn McClanahan will guide us through some of the healthcare reform changes being implemented now. We will look at “The Continuing Soap Opera of Health Care Reform”. This implementation of health care reform has been a rocky road. The exchanges are in disarray and the law was held hostage to the budget crises. Who knows what will transpire next? Find out when Dr. McClanahan presents the next installment of "As Reform Turns."

On behalf of the 2014 Winter Symposium Planning Committee, I believe that we have planned an educational program that encompasses an integrated approach to helping our clients with their financial planning and retirement planning. We are delighted to bring many of the same speakers who presented at FPA Experience in Orlando to the National Capital Area.

Join us for a day of education and networking.  We will end the day with a drawing for three mini ipads! Don’t miss the excitement, and don’t miss the CEU! 2 CFP, CIMA, VA Insurance, and MD Insurance Approved for Ethics! 6 CFP, CIMA, VA Insurance and 4 MD Insurance Approved for the Symposium! 6 CPA CPE Offered! We look forward to seeing you there! Register on-line now for the few remaining seats!

Best wishes for a happy and prosperous new year!

Dear Colleagues:

January 31, 2014 begins the Year of the Wood Horse according to the Chinese Zodiac.

I can think of no better way to usher in the Lunar New Year than to attend the 2014 FPA NCA Winter Symposium at the Dulles Hyatt.   The Board of Directors and Winter Symposium planning committee have implemented some very exciting changes. We have morning and afternoon sessions available for networking  and visiting with our sponsors. In addition, we will be delivering a green conference experience with all of the presentations conveniently accessible via Guidebook with mobile capabilities. To further improve the member experience, we have coordinated with the event staff at the Dulles Hyatt Conference Center to have wireless internet and power stations available at the Attendee tables.

I am particularly excited about this year’s theme “Beyond the Numbers: Engaging Your Clients’ Hearts and Minds”.  Please join us for a full day of engaging and educational programs from nationally recognized keynote speakers.  Dan Candura will start off the day with “Ethics for Everyone”. Carolyn McClanahan, CFP® will provide insight on healthcare reform, followed by Bob Doll’s market outlook for 2014. After our first networking break, Dr. Wade Pfau and Manish Malhorta   will present their complementary views for analyzing retirement income: a household balance-sheet stock-based view and a lifetime cash-flow based view.

After our networking luncheon, 2014 FPA National President Janet Stanzak, CFP® will update us on all of the exciting developments happening at FPA.  Carol Craigie, PhD from the College of Financial Planning will discuss how to apply   behavioral economic concepts to financial planning.  Our next speaker Lori Epstein, JD will present estate planning concepts for the modern family. Finally, wealth psychologist Kathleen Burns Kingsbury will provide us with the knowledge and insight to effectively deliver financial advice to couples.

Happy New Year!

Unless things change dramatically in the next few days, 2014 will open with the equity markets at an all-time high, employment numbers improving and housing starts the best they’ve been in years. Most of our firms saw a very successful year in 2013 and many advisors tell me that they are actually looking for staff in the coming year!

What good timing for our first ever FPA-NCA Career Fair on Friday, February 21st at Maggiano’s in Tyson’s Corner from 9am to 5pm. We need firms to sign up to interview for either intern, temporary or full time positions. We already have a lot of interest in the area schools with financial planning programs, from both recent graduates and third year students. Even if you are not actively looking for new talent, consider interviewing anyway. A “mock” interview is still good experience for new graduates and who knows, you may find just the person you didn’t know you needed!

Our winter symposium on Friday, January 31st will be a sell out again this year so if you haven’t registered, please do so soon. This promises to be one of our best all-day events ever with a very strong line-up of nationally recognized speakers.

If you haven’t attended a luncheon meeting in a while, you may be surprised to learn that we are also filling up our normal rooms and having to add space to accommodate more members. This is a problem that we love to have! We have adjusted the schedule for 2014 to have more double presentations with lunch and networking/socializing time in-between. Oh, and don’t forget about our golf tournament and occasional happy hours! There is even a rumor that we might have a FPA day at a Nats game so keep an eye on our website during the year.

If you are interested in a mentoring program, please see the announcement in this newsletter regarding the Financial Planning Association’s next program beginning in January! The program can connect you with an experienced FPA member so you receive best practices and tips from an expert, or you can volunteer to share your own expertise with others. Please see page 18 for more details on this program.

As the new chapter president, engaging our over 800 members is my top priority and I believe that providing outstanding programs and fun networking events is the best way to accomplish this. We are always open to your suggestions about potential speakers, topics, and activities you would like to see. Please reach out to me anytime!

Best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year!
