Happy New Year!

Unless things change dramatically in the next few days, 2014 will open with the equity markets at an all-time high, employment numbers improving and housing starts the best they’ve been in years. Most of our firms saw a very successful year in 2013 and many advisors tell me that they are actually looking for staff in the coming year!

What good timing for our first ever FPA-NCA Career Fair on Friday, February 21st at Maggiano’s in Tyson’s Corner from 9am to 5pm. We need firms to sign up to interview for either intern, temporary or full time positions. We already have a lot of interest in the area schools with financial planning programs, from both recent graduates and third year students. Even if you are not actively looking for new talent, consider interviewing anyway. A “mock” interview is still good experience for new graduates and who knows, you may find just the person you didn’t know you needed!

Our winter symposium on Friday, January 31st will be a sell out again this year so if you haven’t registered, please do so soon. This promises to be one of our best all-day events ever with a very strong line-up of nationally recognized speakers.

If you haven’t attended a luncheon meeting in a while, you may be surprised to learn that we are also filling up our normal rooms and having to add space to accommodate more members. This is a problem that we love to have! We have adjusted the schedule for 2014 to have more double presentations with lunch and networking/socializing time in-between. Oh, and don’t forget about our golf tournament and occasional happy hours! There is even a rumor that we might have a FPA day at a Nats game so keep an eye on our website during the year.

If you are interested in a mentoring program, please see the announcement in this newsletter regarding the Financial Planning Association’s next program beginning in January! The program can connect you with an experienced FPA member so you receive best practices and tips from an expert, or you can volunteer to share your own expertise with others. Please see page 18 for more details on this program.

As the new chapter president, engaging our over 800 members is my top priority and I believe that providing outstanding programs and fun networking events is the best way to accomplish this. We are always open to your suggestions about potential speakers, topics, and activities you would like to see. Please reach out to me anytime!

Best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year!
