Helen Modly, CFP®, CPWA®
If you did not attend our Winter Symposium last Friday, you
missed a great conference. The presentations were varied, timely and presented
by great speakers-some who are new to our chapter. As a student of behavioral
finance, I was really impressed by Dr. Carol Craigie’s session on Applying Behavioral Economic Concepts to
Financial Planning. Many studies discuss the various biases clients have,
but I’ve never seen so many practical suggestions on addressing these biases in
every step of the financial planning process. Her slide deck is something I
will refer to often.
Carolyn McClanahan’s session on how the Affordable Care Act
really works for those who purchase individual health care was a wake-up call!
Even if our clients will not be affected, their twenty and thirty something
children will be and they will be looking to us for answers. Both Kathleen
Burns Kinsbury and Lori Epstein gave lively, practical sessions on working with
women and the so-called Modern Family. Both gave outstanding presentations and
their slides were very useful.
In fact, even if you missed the symposium, the slides for
all the presentations will be available on Guidebook.com. Once you download the
app and sign in from your tablet or smartphone, go to Associations. Type in FPA and browse through the guides for all of
our recent events. Program materials from FPA National events are also
available here.
I thoroughly enjoyed seeing so many of you there, both
familiar faces and new. I also want to thank all of our generous sponsors for
attending. There were many new firms represented, and I look forward to getting
to know them and their offerings better over the course of the year.
Don’t forget to check our website often for upcoming events.
This month’s Career Fair and Professional Development meeting are shaping up to
be a real success for a new type of event for us. Our March meeting with Jim
Pavia and Michael Kitces can’t help but be a standout meeting. Be sure to
register early for our Annual Golf Event, which will be an annual event for 21 years this year on May 8 at 1757 Golf Club.
We will certainly sell out as we always have in the past. Please review the
contents of our Newsletter for more information on all of these events, as well
as an upcoming Pro Bono opportunity to work with the Washington Cancer
Institute.
As always, feel free to contact me if you have ideas for
increasing our members’ satisfaction with FPA NCA.
Warmest regards,
Helen Modly
