Chris Rivers, CFP®                       President’s Message

October is often thought of as the month of crashes in the market, and indeed there have been a few notable ones – the Panic of 1907, the Crash of 1929, and more recently, Black Monday in 1987.   However, this is really a psychological effect, due to a few large crashes over the last 100+ years, rather than actual trend. In fact, since 1950, markets posted gains in October 42 times, versus 27 declines, and on average the S&P 500 gained 0.7% in October.

So while the change of seasons and the turning on the leaves here in DC may trigger memories of October pain, the reality is October is often a time of opportunity. As we move into the fall, we have a number of programs and events on tap, to help your practice and your clients navigate the road ahead.

On October 3rd, at Westwood Country Club, we have a great event lined up, with our colleague (and platinum sponsor) Gary Altman presenting a talk on taxes, charitable giving, trusts, and other estate planning topics. Following Gary, we have Doug Orton, from platinum sponsor MFS speaking to us about generational wealth transfer, including how to communicate family wealth, and what pitfalls to avoid.

In addition, on October 24, we will celebrate Oktoberfest at CraftHouse in Arlington. We had a great turn out for this event in Arlington last year, so we hope you will join us again this year!

Be on the lookout for details regarding our NexGen Retreat on November 7. The Retreat will be held at the Lakehouse in Reston, Virginia, surrounded by a tranquil setting with a beautiful show of the fall foliage. This event offers great networking for our next generation of planners with CE. Following the Retreat, we will have a Happy Hour with CE, featuring Tom Galgano with Vanguard Investments speaking on Trust and Financial Advice.

Mark your calendars for a return to Westwood on December 5th for our member luncheon. Our first speaker will be Harlan Accola with Fairway Mortgage Corporation speaking on Advanced Applications – Reverse Mortgage Research in Retirement Planning. Following Harlan, Terry Clower with George Mason University will give us an Economic Review and Outlook for 2019 and 2020. This event is always well attended, so please register early to save your place!

On the pro bono side, we have Metro Washington Financial Planning Day in Falls Church on October 12th, providing the community with pro bono planning and education.  Details are up on our website – if you haven’t yet volunteered, do so ASAP.

Lastly, we are putting the finishing touches on the upcoming Winter Symposium, scheduled for Friday, January 24, 2020, at the Marriott in Tysons Corner.  We are excited to be moving to a new location, and we have a great program lined up.  Stay tuned to our emails and social media posts for speaker announcements over the coming weeks.

Please let us know how we can improve FPA NCA and you member experience. We appreciate all that you do to support the chapter and the community.

All the best,
Chris
