President’s Message

While spring greeted us all with a snowstorm, it was nice and warm inside Bethesda Country Club for our annual Media Training with Ben Lewis. This year, Ben changed things up and finished by conducting mock interviews with three of the day’s attendees, including me. At the conclusion, Ben provided us each with feedback, and I’ll admit to choking a bit under the pressure of an entire room of advisors watching me. Not Capitals-in-the-playoffs-level choking, but it was tougher than I expected. Fortunately, the other two victims…errrr I mean participants, did very well. Ben also talked with us about FPA’s Media Source. If you’re not participating in it, you’re missing a significant member benefit and great opportunities to be quoted in the media.

During lunch, Gary Altman delivered an excellent presentation on the new tax law and the planning opportunities and issues created by this significant piece of legislation. How to leverage the 199A deduction for pass-through entities was very interesting.

As I continue to collect insights from the icons and trailblazers of our profession on the value of not just being a member of, but actively participating in, the FPA, Barry Glassman, President and Founder of Glassman Wealth Services was kind enough to provide this month’s quote. If you’re like me and listen to WTOP while sitting in endless hours of traffic in the evenings, you’ve no doubt heard Barry’s segments. Barry shared:

"The Financial Planning Association helps me to be involved and grow with my local community of advisors and planners in ways that are otherwise impossible.  With each event, I gain insight and learn something new; if not from the lectern, then from my peers in the audience.  The FPA fosters this type of sharing and mentoring, striving to help better the profession and our abilities to serve clients.

We won’t have a lunch program in April, but please join us for a happy hour to celebrate the end of tax season. On April 12th at Maggiano’s in Chevy Chase, Mike Eastman from Sandy Spring Bank will join us to share how you can best assist clients who are dealing with the fallout from prior mortgage mistakes, such as 5/1 ARMs. In addition to good food, drink and company, you’ll get one CE credit!

As always when it starts getting warm (here’s hoping!), it’s time to think golf and the FPA NCA’s Charity Golf Classic is a great way to beat the dust off those clubs. Join us at 1757 Golf Club on May 2nd for this annual rite of passage.

Lastly, I am excited to Welcome Cat Mulcahy of Alexandria Capital to our Board of Directors. Cat will be co-chairing our Membership Committee with Susan Chesson.

Thank you for all of the great things you do for your clients and our profession. I appreciate your passion and integrity. Oh, and Go Nats!

All the best,
Howard
